The Night Berto Came One Minute From Glory

Berto’s legendary defensive stand nearly delivered Ontario a championship

It’s a sports axiom that for teams to have a chance at winning a championship, they need to have a championship mindset, a championship pedigree, and players with championship experience on the roster.  That is why coaches and players that have won championships are coveted by other teams and are often some of the most highly pursued commodities in the sport.  Fortunately for the Empire Strykers, their player-coach Berto has that experience, attitude, and pedigree because before the Empire Strykers were named the Empire Strykers, they were the Ontario Fury and Berto led the team to within a hair's breadth of a championship.

The story of the 2021 MASL Championship is the story of defensive titan Robert "Berto" Palmer putting on an absolute masterclass for the Ontario Fury. Having just been named the MASL Defender of the Year, "Berto" carried the emotional weight of a franchise chasing its first title and playing in memory of their late teammate, Joseph Cairel.

The series opened brutally for Ontario. The San Diego Sockers weaponized their home turf, suffocating the Fury in a 7–3 loss. Berto spent the evening throwing his body in front of rocket shots, but San Diego’s turf-heavy transitions left the Fury exposed. Walking off the floor, Berto rallied the locker room, reminding them that they hadn't come this far just to watch the Sockers lift the Ron Newman Cup.

Back on the carpet for Game 2, Berto played like a man possessed. He anchored Ontario's backline with his signature physical, fearless style, and Berto recorded crucial blocks, stepping directly into the path of San Diego's powerhouse forwards. Behind Berto's gritty defensive stops, Ontario's offense found its rhythm. With the season on the line in overtime, Berto helped lock down the defensive zone until Ontario squeezed through a dramatic 6–5 victory, forcing a winner-take-all mini-game. With only a 15-minute mini-game left to decide the world champion, the intensity reached a boiling point. Berto, visibly exhausted but fueled by pure adrenaline, marshaled a tired Fury defense.

Ontario fought tooth and nail, holding a tight 1–1 line deep into the final period. Berto made two phenomenal tracking tackles to break up odd-man rushes, keeping the dream alive. But arena soccer is a game of fractions of a second. With less than a minute left in the game, San Diego found a microscopic opening on a quick transition play and poked home the game-winner to take it 2–1.

Though Berto and the Fury fell just short of the title that night, his legendary defensive stand cemented his legacy in the Inland Empire—a legacy he continues today as the head coach of the organization.
